The common daffodil above has the botanical name Narcissus. The botanical name for this flower

was inspired by the mythological fellow in the painting below. In Greek Mythology, Narcissus is remembered

for having fallen in love with himself. This painting illustrates Narcissus as he is mesmerized by his own

reflected image in the pool. The Nymph Echo fell in love with him and her love was not returned.

The flower was named as such because of its habit of "looking" downward just like Narcissus.

The images below are from a series of pictures I made starring a group of daffodils from my own garden.

Inspired by the botanist who named the daffodil Narcissus, I began looking for the personality in each

individual flower. Also, because this species thrives in

groups, they seem to exhibit social behavior. I rarely add titles to my photographs but in this case

I could not resist ascribing human characteristics to each tableau.
